Innovative Energietechnologien in Österreich – Marktentwicklung 2012
2. Summary
2.1 Motivation, method and content
The documentation and market research in the field of technologies for the exploit of
renewable energy sources creates a basis for the planning and decision making in
politics, economy, research and development. The aim of this market study
”Innovative energy technologies in Austria – market development 2011“ is to lay a
foundation in the following fields: biomass, photovoltaics, solar thermal and heat
pumps.
Methods used are: questionnaires handed out to manufacturers, trading firms and
installation companies as well as questionnaires of funding providers at the national
and local governments. Furthermore information is gathered with a survey of
literature, the evaluation of available statistics and internet research. The obtained
data is displayed in time series to provide the starting point for deeper analysis and
strategically considerations.
First the market development is illustrated by production numbers or installed
capacities and then the energy gain is calculated taking into account the life cycle of
the machinery. The necessary support energy for the main and auxiliary machinery is
discussed and savings in gross and net of greenhouse gas emissions are calculated.
The graphically displayed turnovers and the job creating effects show eventually the
impact of the various technologies in Austria. Results are shown in alphabetical order
of technologies.
2.2 Introduction
The year 2012 shows further recovery on the market in the area of the examined
technologies. One factor was the permanently high oil price which was more than
100 $/barrel in 2012: the second year in a row with such a high oil price. A negative
factor was the reluctant economy last year. However the market development of the
examined technologies was not as uniform as might have been expected from the
marginal conditions. After losses in the previous years biomass heating stoves and
heat pumps clearly increased on the market last year. The growth of photovoltaics on
the market continued the fourth year in a row whereas the photovoltaics market
almost doubled in 2012. On the contrary the sales figures of biomass heating stoves
and solar heat decreased. Consequently the sales figures of solar hear decreased
the third year in a row. Reasons are the increasing competition between solar heat
and photovoltaics in regard to surface area and investments. The further
development of the sales figures of the examined technologies depends heavily on
the general development of the economy. Furthermore the main market of the
heating technologies will move from new construction to reconstruction in the
upcoming years whereby the reconstruction rates will become an important factor.
2.3 Solid biomass - fuels
The energetic utilisation of solid biomass has a long tradition in Austria and is still a
very important factor within the renewable energy sector. The consumption of final
energy from sold biofuels increased from 142 PJ for 2007 to 174 PJ for 2012. The
consumption of wood chips is increasing steadily since the beginning of the 1980s. In
2012 the wood chips consumption was 80 PJ and thus exceeds the consumption of
wood logs with 70 PJ. The very well documented wood pellet market developed with
an annual growth rate between 30 and 40 % until 2006. This development was then
