their reality. They read racial slavery as curious abnormalities or aberrations, as a
matter apart from the “true” narrative of American history. This lecture on the
struggle to write slavery traces not only the historical, social, intellectual and literary
impulses that contributed to the construction of this myth but also the conditions
under which these traditional concepts were challenged, by African American
writers. The result was a radical questioning and revision of the white master
narrative and a powerful renegotiation of the fact-fiction debate.

The lecture provides a survey of modernist literature in Britain and Ireland, taking
in important cultural contexts and cognate artistic developments, with some
glimpses of European literary hallmarks. Connecting with the lecture on Victorian
Literature and Culture of Summer Semester 2012, the period covered extends
from late Victorian times through the rupture symbolized by the First World War
and ends roughly with the post-war years of World Ward II.
