ESTES-STIPENDIUM
An invaluable experience
I would firstly like to express my gratitude
to the German Trauma Society for
sponsoring this grant that has allowed
me to travel from my home country of
Australia to participate at the 12th European
Congress of Trauma and Emergency
Surgery. I found the 2011 Congress
an invaluable experience with regards
to the exposure it enabled me to gain to
some of the world’s best traumatology
teaching from keynote speakers. The visceral
trauma sessions were a particular
highlight for me as were the disaster and
military session on „Peace and War surgery:
Civilian and Military Surgeons can
learn from each other“. Other sessions
such as the ILC’s on coagulopathy, pelvic
trauma and the open abdomen were
also valuable. I enjoyed the new format of
the „twelve to twelve lectures“ where we
were invited to „feed our brains before
our bellies“, and these bite size sessions
were particularly focussed and relevant.
With regards to lectures however it was
the input from the Japanese delegation
to the conference who shared a very moving
insight into the countries recent tsunami
that left a lasting impression on me.
The descriptions they provided about
the nature and scale of the disaster were
sobering, however it was such a positive
thing to learn from the challenges, and
indeed victories, they have had in meeting
the demands this scale of disaster
placed on the country’s health system. It
was a great reminder of the reason why
these conferences are so important – to
refine and improve our ability to provide
care for the injured patient.
In addition to the didactic learning, I also
found this congress an incredibly constructive
forum to dialogue with peers as
well as senior experienced colleagues.
In a sense this forum became somewhat
like a living textbook in acute surgery for
me. In terms of research, I am currently
completing my PhD in traumatology and
I found the discussion on issues raised
during my paper presentation really
helped focus some of ideas, and the ability
to discuss one-on-one with experts
in the field afterwards has truly given
momentum to some key areas of my research
into the definition of polytrauma.
In summary, this grant has been incredibly
beneficial in allowing me to participate
at this congress, which in turn has helped
spur on much progress towards finishing
my research project and has expanded
my mind as a result of the exposure to a
bigger picture of trauma surgery.
