aus Polynesien stellen die Spezialisten vor ganz
neue Aufgaben. Materialien wie Papier, Keramik,
Federn oder Fasern sind ungeahnte Herausforderungen
für Restauratoren, die von Haus aus auf
europäische Kunst spezialisiert sind.
Auf einem Tisch liegt ein chinesisches Pergament
aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Vorsichtig blättert
Restauratorin Flavia Serena mehrere Lagen fragilen
Papiers ab, um sie sorgfältig zu unterfüttern.
„Man muss jeden Arbeitsschritt genau überdenken,
denn jedes Stück ist einzigartig“, sagt sie.
„Wir sind daran gewöhnt, Michelangelos
und Caravaggios zu restaurieren“, sagt Stefania
Pandozy, die Leiterin dieses kleinen Labors.
„Aber bei den Stücken, an denen wir hier
arbeiten, kennen wir den Urheber oder den
Autor nicht. Wir wissen nur, woher sie kamen.
Wir fühlen eine große Verantwortung für den
Erhalt dieser Kunstgegenstände – wir bauen
Brücken der Wahrnehmung zwischen verschiedenen
Kulturen.“
Wenn die Restauratoren Feierabend machen,
verschließt Gianni Crea wieder alle Türen. „In
jedem Winkel der Museen gibt es Kunstwerke,
und jedes davon hat seine eigene Geschichte“,
sagt er. „Ich bin voller Stolz und wenn der Tag zu
Ende geht, verspüre ich tiefe Befriedigung.“

with lining. “You have to think a lot before you
move because every work is unique,” she says.
“We are accustomed to restoring Michelangelo
and Caravaggio,” says Stefania Pandozy, director
of this tiny laboratory. “With these pieces we
don’t know the artist or the author, only where
they come from. We feel a responsibility to
preserve these artworks and build a bridge of
awareness across different cultures.”
As thousands of tourists pour out of the
Vatican Museums at the end of the day the
restorers are about to lay down their tools
while the key keeper prepares to lock the doors.
“Every corner of the museums has a piece of art
with its own story, which makes me feel very
emotional and I am really proud to share that,”
Crea says. “When the day ends, I feel enormous
satisfaction.”
