2007 begeisterten die Freilichtspiele «D'Gotthardbahn» das Publikum in Göschenen.
In 2007 the open air play about the tunnel, "D'Gotthardbahn", delighted audiences in Göschenen.
It’s crazy, the idea of building a waterway over the Alps. Conquering
hundreds of metres in altitude with dozens of locks and tunnels, in
order to travel by ship from the North Sea to the Mediterranean via the
Gotthard. A pipe-dream like no other. But were the plans presented
to the public by the Graubünden engineer Pietro Caminada in the early
20th century really meant to be taken seriously? The time, at least,
seemed just right for his project, just a few years after the Swiss celebrated
the opening of the Gotthard rail tunnel. Electrification was
also rapidly forging ahead in the Uri side valleys. Faith in technology
and progress was great – everything seemed possible, even a
waterway running past Göschenen at Gotthard.
land. It all started in 1999, with “D’Gotthardposcht” (“The Gotthard Post”). Then in
2007 “D’Gotthardbahn” ("The Gotthard Railway") opened in Göschenen, and in
2010 “Suworow” (“Suvorov”) came to the stage. 2013 saw the launch of “Tyyfelsbrigg“,
a grand spectacular about the famous Devil’s Bridge.
An experienced team is again responsible for ensuring the artistic quality of
the new open-air play: written by the well-known playwright Paul Steinmann
and under the experienced direction of Stefan Camenzind, amateur actors,
volunteer helpers and a dedicated organisation committee from the area will
bring “Göschenen am Meer” to life. They are pulling out all the stops for one of
the cultural highlights of summer 2017 in the Gotthard region.
The open-air performance “Göschenen am Meer” (“Göschenen on
Sea”) tells the story of that energy-charged era and the Graubünden
engineer’s ambitious plans. This summer, local actors and well-known
musicians will bring the new play, written in local dialect, to the openair
stage. Set before the imposing mountain backdrop, the visitors
can expect a witty yet profound spectacle, with delightful dialogues
and even a love story.
Cultural highlight of the summer
In the Gotthard region, they know this is the perfect mix for successful
open-air theatre. Every few years since 1999 the local cultural forum
association “kulturforum andermatt gotthard” has launched a new play,
attracting thousands of theatre-goers, all types of drama enthusiasts
and especially fans of popular and open-air theatre to the Urner Ober-
