Adventure seekers only have to go as far as Giornico – just an hour’s<br />
drive from Andermatt – to experience Mediterranean flair. The Ticino<br />
village is situated in the Leventina Valley, which offers a wide variety of<br />
landscapes due to its overall 800-metre difference in altitude. Starting<br />
from the Gotthard Pass, the journey through the Leventina Valley passes<br />
through the rugged mountain region, which can even be snow-covered,<br />
depending on the season. The route from north to south continues<br />
through dense coniferous forest and finally ends up between vineyards<br />
and fig trees, which hint at warm temperatures. The picturesque village<br />
of Giornico is located at the transition from the sparse Alpine landscape<br />
to the green plains of the Leventina Valley. Even the early drovers rated<br />
the village as a place to rest on the arduous journey over the Gotthard<br />
Pass. Later, the famous Gotthard Post line passed through there. Until<br />
the opening of the Gotthard motorway tunnel in 1980, Giornico remained<br />
a lively stopover location for travellers on the north-south route, so it’s<br />
no surprise that the inhabitants have a reputation for being particularly<br />
open and hospitable to visitors.<br />

Mediterranes Flair erleben Entdeckungslustige bereits in Giornico –<br />
eine knappe Autostunde von Andermatt entfernt. Das Tessiner Dörfchen<br />
liegt in der Leventina, einem Tal, das mit einer Höhendifferenz von<br />
insgesamt 800 Metern komplett unterschiedliche Landschaften bietet:<br />
Die Reise durch die Leventina beginnt vom Gotthardpass her kommend im<br />
rauen, je nach Jahreszeit gar schneebedeckten Berggebiet. Weiter führt<br />
der Weg von Norden nach Süden durch dichten Nadelwald und endet<br />
schliesslich zwischen Weinbergen und Feigenbäumen, die milde Temperaturen<br />
erahnen lassen. Am Übergang der kargen Alpenlandschaft zur<br />
grünen Ebene der Leventina befindet sich das malerische Giornico. Bereits<br />
die frühen Säumer schätzten das Dorf, um auf ihrem beschwerlichen Weg<br />
über den Gotthardpass Rast einzulegen. Später durchquerte die berühmte<br />
Gotthardpostlinie den Ort. Bis zur Eröffnung des Gotthard-Autobahntunnels<br />
1980 blieb Giornico ein lebhafter Durchfahrtsort für Nord-Süd<br />
Reisende. Es überrascht daher nicht, dass die Bewohner als besonders<br />
offen und gastfreundlich gegenüber Fremden gelten.<br />
Dolce far niente<br />
It wasn’t just transport developments that characterised Giornico. Long<br />
before that the unique village landscape was also shaped by the mighty<br />
forces of nature: a fork in the Ticino river forms a small island, which is<br />
reached via two Roman bridges. The idyllic island, with its cosy “Grotto<br />
dei Due Ponti” is worth a visit, to listen to the rushing of the river and<br />
soak up the sun’s rays while enjoying a glass of wine. If you want to<br />
discover other authentic grotti, take a stroll along the “Carè di Grott”<br />
pathway. The local wine is also worth looking out for, known among wine<br />
connoisseurs as a unique taste experience. Due to its unusually elevated<br />
location at 400 m a.s.l. and the relatively cool temperatures, the grapes<br />
develop a remarkably thick skin, which gives the wine a unique flavour.<br />
These fine wines are of course also a perfect complement to the enjoyment<br />
of Ticino cuisine. The “Grotto dei due Ponti” serves home-made<br />
pasta and regional specialities on its large terrace – all you need for<br />
the Italian vibe of Dolce far niente, or “pleasant idleness”! And Giornico<br />

Nicht nur verkehrstechnische Entwicklungen prägten Giornico. Lange<br />
zuvor haben auch die gewaltigen Kräfte der Natur das einzigartige Dorfbild<br />
geformt: Eine Gabelung des Flusses Ticino bildet eine kleine Insel,<br />
die über zwei romanische Brücken zu erreichen ist. Die idyllische Isola mit<br />
ihrem gemütlichen «Grotto dei Due Ponti» bietet sich an, um bei einem<br />
Glas Wein das Rauschen des Flusses und die wärmenden Sonnenstrahlen<br />
zu geniessen. Wer Lust hat, noch weitere authentische Grotti zu entdecken,<br />
nimmt am besten den Spazierweg «Carè di Grott» unter die<br />
Füsse. Auch der lokale Wein verdient besondere Aufmerksamkeit, gilt er<br />
