Brenner – I feel very close to the failure, to the tragedy, both the
tragedy of bourgeois feminism as embodied in Ophelia and the tragedy of
Communism and the Enlightenment as embodied in Hamlet. I would like to find a way
out of this End Game, a way out of this European trap of elitism and cognition and
mourning. Müller died in 1995, so in his final years he mourned the demise of
Communism and the fall of the German Democratic Republic, his country. I would like
to—I need to—get beyond the mourning. I come from a culture, especially in Vienna,
where daily life is one of lamentation and depression. There is always a sense of
loss. We’re so consumed by loss that we never get around to building anything new.
