Cato Ridge Epping<br />

The Retail unit’s Cato Ridge premises has undertaken the<br />

following green, environmental and sustainability aspects:<br />

■ Material used for the sublayer flooring and hardstand<br />

was sourced from the nearby Asmang mine, and has<br />

therefore assisted in cleaning up part of the mining<br />

dump<br />

■ Electricity consumption will be reduced due to the use<br />

of motion sensors being installed<br />

■ Natural ventilation and separately activated smoke<br />

ventilation is being used, as well as having several walls<br />

and the roof insulated<br />

■ All office windows have been thermally tinted which<br />

will reduce the heat load caused by the sunlight, and<br />

the structure of the offices has been designed to<br />

prevent direct sunlight in these areas<br />

■ The bricks used onsite are made from 70% recycled<br />

material<br />

■ Part of the labour was sourced from the local<br />

community<br />

■ Only local indigenous flora has been planted<br />

The new R95 million warehouse in Epping, made of<br />

recycled material including crushed concrete and bricks<br />

from the old Athlone power station, has received an<br />

award for the developers.<br />

■ Growthpoint Properties Limited won the SA Property<br />

Owners Association (SAPOA) Innovative Excellence<br />

Award for building this facility<br />

■ The bricks contain 70% recycled material from the<br />

demolished Athlone power station<br />

■ The latest green building technologies were applied to<br />

convert a contaminated old foundry into the new<br />

warehouse<br />

■ The facility was converted into a high spec, high tech<br />

warehouse of international standards<br />

■ The design has shifted the distribution model from<br />

parochial to regional, achieving greater operational<br />

and economic efficiency<br />

■ Recycled steel and electrical cables were also utilised<br />

■ Eco-glass windows and efficient airconditioning system<br />

aid with energy saving temperature management<br />
