<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> new models <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
year represent <strong>the</strong> premises for <strong>the</strong> improved operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sector.<br />
❚ CNH Global posted operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 105 million euros<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first half, compared with operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 161<br />
million euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002. The result for <strong>2003</strong> was<br />
penalized by a deterioration <strong>in</strong> volumes stemm<strong>in</strong>g from lower<br />
sales <strong>of</strong> construction equipment, deterioration <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sales<br />
mix, higher social security and medical costs for its<br />
employees, and <strong>the</strong> negative foreign exchange effect<br />
caused by streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> euro.<br />
However, notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se unfavorable conditions,<br />
<strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>itability <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sector rema<strong>in</strong>ed at healthy levels<br />
thanks to improved marg<strong>in</strong>s for new products <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
agricultural segment, higher prices, and synergies that<br />
made it possible to realize major cost sav<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
❚ Iveco’s operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come fell to 22 million euros, down from<br />
<strong>the</strong> 36 million euros <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same period last year due ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
to changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> consolidation. On a comparable<br />
basis operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come was <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with that reported <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
❚ Ferrari had an operat<strong>in</strong>g loss <strong>of</strong> -16 million euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
half <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, compared with operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 10 million<br />
euros dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same period <strong>of</strong> 2002. The deterioration <strong>in</strong><br />
its operat<strong>in</strong>g result stemmed from <strong>the</strong> negative foreign<br />
exchange effect caused by streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> euro and <strong>the</strong><br />
major <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> research and development outlays for future<br />
models. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> Sector achieved significant<br />
improvements thanks to higher volumes and a favorable mix<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ferrari models, which partially <strong>of</strong>fset <strong>the</strong> negative factors<br />
described above.<br />
❚ Magneti Marelli reported operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 3 million<br />
euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, improv<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
loss <strong>of</strong> -10 million euros posted for <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>First</strong> <strong>Half</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong><br />
thanks to efficiency ga<strong>in</strong>s and materials cost conta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />
measures that more than compensated for <strong>the</strong> negative effect<br />
<strong>of</strong> lower volumes. On a comparable consolidation basis,<br />
given that Midas posted a major loss <strong>in</strong> 2002, <strong>the</strong> Sector<br />
would have shown an even greater improvement.<br />
❚ Comau posted an operat<strong>in</strong>g loss <strong>of</strong> -7 million euros <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> first half, slightly worse than <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> -5 million euros<br />
reported for <strong>the</strong> same period <strong>of</strong> 2002, due to a reduction <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>come caused by lower levels <strong>of</strong> activity and a deterioration<br />
<strong>in</strong> marg<strong>in</strong>s on contract work <strong>in</strong> Europe. The deterioration <strong>in</strong><br />
this result <strong>of</strong>fset <strong>the</strong> improvement reported by North<br />
American activities thanks to higher volumes.<br />
❚ Teksid had operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 5 million euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first<br />
half <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, aga<strong>in</strong>st operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 12 million euros<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same period <strong>of</strong> 2002 (operat<strong>in</strong>g loss <strong>of</strong> -3 million euros,<br />
exclud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>come generated by <strong>the</strong> Alum<strong>in</strong>um Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Unit, which was sold). On a comparable basis, <strong>the</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sector improved thanks to efficiency ga<strong>in</strong>s, which<br />
<strong>of</strong>fset deterioration <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> price/cost ratio.<br />
❚ Although its pr<strong>of</strong>itability rema<strong>in</strong>ed at good levels, FiatAvio<br />
posted a decrease <strong>in</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come from 119 million<br />
euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002 to 53 million euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six<br />
months <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong> due to deterioration <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> volume/mix ratio<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> period and <strong>the</strong> unfavorable trend <strong>in</strong> foreign<br />
exchange rates.<br />
❚ Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Solutions reported operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 17 million<br />
euros, show<strong>in</strong>g a decrease from <strong>the</strong> operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 38<br />
million euros reported <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002, pr<strong>in</strong>cipally due to<br />
deconsolidation <strong>of</strong> IPI, which had posted operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong><br />
16 million euros, and lower <strong>in</strong>come from <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> real estate.<br />
❚ Itedi improved its operat<strong>in</strong>g result from a loss <strong>of</strong> -1 million euros<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002 to <strong>in</strong>come <strong>of</strong> 5 million euros <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />
period <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, thanks to cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong> efficiency recovery<br />
programs, lower paper costs, and higher advertis<strong>in</strong>g revenues.<br />
