Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Western European market<br />
for commercial vehicles (GVW <strong>of</strong> 2.8 tons or more) contracted<br />
slightly compared with <strong>the</strong> same period last year. Thanks to<br />
a good performance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first quarter, new vehicle<br />
registrations totaled 488,400 units for <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>2003</strong>, down just 0.5% from <strong>the</strong> 490,850 units registered <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> same period last year.<br />
Among <strong>the</strong> major European markets, <strong>the</strong> decrease <strong>in</strong> new<br />
vehicle registrations was particularly pronounced <strong>in</strong> Italy (-12.6%)<br />
and France (-6.7%). Elsewhere, shipments were up <strong>in</strong> Great<br />
Brita<strong>in</strong> (+9.2%), Germany (+2.8%) and Spa<strong>in</strong> (+5.0%).<br />
The overall contraction <strong>in</strong> demand had an impact on all<br />
segments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> market, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> heavy vehicles.<br />
In this market segment, new vehicle registrations totaled 113,000<br />
units, for an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>of</strong> 3.1% over <strong>the</strong> 110,000 units shipped <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002. Strong ga<strong>in</strong>s were recorded <strong>in</strong> Great<br />
Brita<strong>in</strong> (+16.2%), Spa<strong>in</strong> (+6.6%) and Germany (+3.1%), while<br />
demand decreased <strong>in</strong> France (-5.7%) and Italy (-1.6%).<br />
Demand for medium vehicles (about 38,300 new units registered<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>) was down 8.1% compared with<br />
<strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002 (41,700 units). This contraction affected to<br />
different degrees all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major European markets, with<br />
decreases <strong>of</strong> 16.8% <strong>in</strong> France, 12.6% <strong>in</strong> Italy, 11.9% <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>,<br />
4.7% <strong>in</strong> Germany and 3.2% <strong>in</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong>.<br />
In Western Europe, new registrations <strong>of</strong> light commercial<br />
vehicles totaled more than 337,000 units, down slightly (-0.8%)<br />
from <strong>the</strong> 340,000 units registered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
Demand decreased by 15.5% <strong>in</strong> Italy and 6.2% <strong>in</strong> France, but<br />
<strong>the</strong> British, Spanish and German markets bucked <strong>the</strong> trend,<br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g 9.5%, 6.6% and 4.0%, respectively.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, Iveco sold a total <strong>of</strong> 73,900 vehicles<br />
worldwide, or about 5% less than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002<br />
(77,900 units, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 3,100 vehicles shipped by Naveco).<br />
When <strong>the</strong> approximately 23,400 vehicles sold by licensees and<br />
associated companies (19,200 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002)<br />
are added, total sales amount to about 97,300 units (100,700<br />
units when 50% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vehicles sold by Naveco are <strong>in</strong>cluded),<br />
up from 97,100 units <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
In Western Europe, Iveco shipped about 60,630 vehicles, a<br />
decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> just 2.2% compared with <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002<br />
(62,000 vehicles). The biggest drop occurred <strong>in</strong> Italy, where unit<br />
sales were 8.8% less than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />

Commercial Vehicles — Iveco<br />
The Sector’s share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Western European market for vehicles<br />
with GVW <strong>of</strong> 2.8 tons or more decl<strong>in</strong>ed from 12.9% to 11.6% due<br />
to <strong>the</strong> market trends discussed above. Iveco’s market share fell<br />
to 26.4% for medium vehicles (30.1% <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002),<br />
decreased by one percentage po<strong>in</strong>t (from 11.1% to 10.1%) for<br />
light vehicles and held relatively steady for heavy vehicles (from<br />
11.7% to 11.4%).<br />
In Eastern Europe, Iveco sold about 4,850 units, or 8% more<br />
than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
Customers outside <strong>of</strong> Europe bought a total <strong>of</strong> about 8,400<br />
vehicles, a decrease <strong>of</strong> 26% compared with <strong>the</strong> first six months<br />
<strong>of</strong> 2002 (11,400 units).<br />
Unit sales were down sharply <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America, where Iveco<br />
shipped about 2,600 units (-28.5% compared with <strong>the</strong> 3,600<br />
vehicles sold <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002).<br />
Irisbus sold more than 4,400 busses, or about 8.7% less than<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
In Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Naveco, a 50-50 jo<strong>in</strong>t venture with <strong>the</strong> Yueij<strong>in</strong> Group,<br />
produced and sold about 6,800 light commercial vehicles, for<br />
a ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> 9.7% compared with <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
The performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> associated companies, which<br />
produce and sell vehicles under Iveco’s license, is reviewed<br />
below:<br />
❚ In Turkey, where demand improved dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first six months<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, Otoyol sold 2,205 units, or about 23% more than <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> same period last year.<br />
❚ In India, Ashok Leyland manufactured and sold a total <strong>of</strong><br />
21,195 vehicles, for a ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> about 22% compared with<br />
<strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />
The Commercial Vehicles Sector produced 198,792 diesel<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first six months <strong>of</strong> <strong>2003</strong>, as higher demand<br />
from noncaptive customers helped to conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> decrease<br />
<strong>of</strong> about 4.8% compared with <strong>the</strong> same period last year.<br />
