N order to design a fiber optic system for a customer, certain key pieces of data must be known about their existing system or construction plans. We have listed the main components in this bulletin. Overview Whether a fiber optic customer inherits a fiber cable system or components or contracts to have them installed, there a critical parameters that must be known in order to do the optical and RF design for that system. Questions regarding the type of fiber cable being used, how many fibers have been laid, whether the fibers are homerun or tree-and-branch style and what connector types were used are examples. Fiber Optic Survey These questions should provide the necessary data to design your fiber system. 1. What type of fiber cable is being used? Single mode or Multimode? 2. Is there a separate fiber from the headend to each location or a single fiber or cable from the headend that passes by each location serially? 3. Is the fiber cable connectorized and which connectors have been used? (FC, SC, ST, mini-SC etc.)*see photo 4. Do the fiber ends terminate in a WIC cabinet or fiber management box? If so, are the connectors on the front panels of the box accessible? 5. Are the individual fibers to the end locations labeled and/or color-coded? 1
