A contrastive analysis of the above two tables reveals that forms of<br />

witen followed by an interrogative display a stronger tendency to<br />

employ ne alone than those not followed by an interrogative, and this<br />

is observed not merely in late ME texts as already pointed out in<br />

existing studies but also in texts with early characteristics.<br />

Furthermore, not only is ne preferred to ne ... not and not, but also<br />

never, no, etc. are only sparingly employed in the present syntactic<br />
