to feel from <strong>the</strong> lessons <strong>the</strong>y had learned at Leavenworth and<br />

Benning. l8 <strong>The</strong>y knew <strong>the</strong>y were cut <strong>of</strong>f. <strong>The</strong> G-2 reports and<br />

<strong>the</strong> incessant patrol activities against all portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> defensive<br />

circle told <strong>the</strong>m so. But <strong>the</strong>y did not feel cut <strong>of</strong>f.a <strong>The</strong>y remained<br />

mobile and mentally able to promote all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tactical advantages<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir interior position. <strong>The</strong> thought that <strong>the</strong>re were Germans<br />

all around <strong>the</strong>m brought no particular extra worry. <strong>The</strong>y were<br />

confident that help from <strong>the</strong> outside was just around <strong>the</strong> corner. 20<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> most decisive gains <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period had been in <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fighting men <strong>the</strong>mselves and in <strong>the</strong>ir feeling about<br />

one ano<strong>the</strong>r. In <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>the</strong> different elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> defense<br />

were almost out <strong>of</strong> communication one with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Things had happened so fast that <strong>the</strong>y had been compelled to<br />

engage <strong>the</strong> enemy before giving a thought to <strong>the</strong>ir own liaison. 21<br />

But in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> battle <strong>the</strong> infantry, <strong>the</strong> armored force and<br />

<strong>the</strong> tank destroyer crews had taken full measure <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

found <strong>the</strong> measure sufficient. 22 <strong>The</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> mutual confidence<br />

and respect had produced not only tactical cohesion but comradeship<br />

in such a degree that before <strong>the</strong> siege was over <strong>the</strong>se units<br />

were to ask <strong>the</strong>ir higher commanders whe<strong>the</strong>r it wouldn't be possible<br />

for <strong>the</strong>m to be joined permanently in one large force. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

had come to believe that toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y had become irresistible. 2s<br />

Mter <strong>the</strong>ir first tilt in which each had spoken bluntly and made<br />

his point, General McAuliffe and Colonel Roberts tabled <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

feelings and worked toge<strong>the</strong>r to perfect <strong>the</strong> team play <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

respective forces. As McAuliffe's advisor on armor, Roberts<br />

found himself among "<strong>the</strong> best and keenest staff" he had ever<br />

seen. 2 ' Not only did <strong>the</strong>y radiate extreme confidence but <strong>the</strong>y<br />

proved to be "great bird dogs" in detecting early enemy build<br />

UpS.25 As soon as <strong>the</strong> first signs <strong>of</strong> an enemy attack became<br />

apparent, Colonel Roberts would alert his Division reserve and<br />

get it moving toward <strong>the</strong> likely area <strong>of</strong> irruption. He would <strong>the</strong>n<br />

concern himself with building ano<strong>the</strong>r Division reserve. He<br />

never bo<strong>the</strong>red General McAuliffe with <strong>the</strong>se details. 26 If it<br />

chanced that Colonel Cherry, <strong>the</strong> Division reserve commander,<br />

got cut up, or if <strong>the</strong> 101st Division troops moved over during an<br />

action and drew parts <strong>of</strong> Team Cherry into <strong>the</strong> front line, <strong>the</strong>re
