Mter being Bushed by <strong>the</strong> fire <strong>the</strong> two companies had headed<br />

west and <strong>the</strong>n south. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trucks got through to <strong>the</strong> Corps<br />

rear and on <strong>the</strong> next day Captain John L. Patterson <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> units, <strong>the</strong> 80lst Ordnance Maintenance Company, taking a<br />

different route, got into <strong>Bastogne</strong> with two trucks bringing 500<br />

gallons <strong>of</strong> gasoline. He <strong>the</strong>n turned south again to bring <strong>the</strong> rest<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> convoy forward. But by that time <strong>the</strong> Germans had already<br />

closed <strong>the</strong> road.82 Such was <strong>the</strong> shortage <strong>of</strong> gasoline in <strong>Bastogne</strong><br />
