<strong>The</strong> few survivors, upon recoiling, were rounded up by <strong>the</strong><br />

members <strong>of</strong> Colonel Allen's overrun 3d Battalion, 327th. <strong>The</strong><br />

German tankers died inside <strong>the</strong>ir tanks.<br />

Although Company C, 502d, had been compelled to engage<br />

without artillery support because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> closeness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> action,<br />

its losses were negligible. It was put in position along <strong>the</strong> high<br />

ground west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> skirmish. At about <strong>the</strong> same time<br />

<strong>the</strong> Company C fight ended, Company A, 502d, was getting<br />

Champs under control and was doing <strong>the</strong> last <strong>of</strong> its rat hunting<br />

through <strong>the</strong> village houses. Company B was put over to <strong>the</strong> eastward<br />

<strong>of</strong> Company A to fill out <strong>the</strong> line as far as <strong>the</strong> 3d Battalion.<br />

In getting to this position, Company B, 502d, took heavy losses<br />

from enemy artillery while moving across <strong>the</strong> high ground north
