Such groups as USCO, the Diggers, and Drop City were
the beginning of a trend that might provide positive alterna-
tives to those who have learned the importance of small
groups, ecology, and ritual. They are still too recent to pro-
vide anything else but hope, yet their spirit is a rare brightness
in the midst of a rather bleak picture.
