NOTE 14: DEFERRED INCOME<br />

UNISA ANNUAL REPORT <strong>2011</strong><br />

The amount represents student fees received in advance in respect<br />

of <strong>the</strong> 2012 academic and financial year, received in <strong>2011</strong>. The<br />

student fees are recognised as income in <strong>the</strong> year when tuition is<br />

provided to <strong>the</strong> student.<br />

Various o<strong>the</strong>r grants received by <strong>the</strong> University during <strong>2011</strong><br />

amounted to R16,723 million (2010: R17,365 million). The University<br />

has spent R7,053 million during <strong>2011</strong> (2010: R 5 747 million).<br />

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has<br />

made five funding allocations to <strong>the</strong> University:<br />

An amount of R100 million for <strong>the</strong> improvement of infrastructure and<br />

student output efficiencies. For <strong>2011</strong>, an amount of R4,939 million<br />

(2010: R24,822 million) was spent on infrastructure, and R2,737<br />

million (2010: R5,233 million) of this amount was charged through<br />

profit and loss.<br />

An amount of R19,4 million for infrastructure and efficiency<br />

(undergraduate engineering laboratories – Florida campus). No<br />

expenditure was incurred during <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

An amount of R50 million for staff restructuring. The University has<br />

spent R5,397 million during <strong>2011</strong> (2010: R2,430 million).<br />

An amount of R228,017 million (2010: R288,107 million) for teaching<br />

and research development. The University has spent R275,635<br />

million during <strong>2011</strong> (2010: R275 565 million).<br />

An amount of R10,922 million (2010: R8,970 million) for foundation<br />

programmes. The University has spent R1,450 million during <strong>2011</strong><br />

(2010: R1,445 million).<br />

An amount of R4 million (2010: R3 million) was received for<br />

veterinary sciences programmes. The University has spent R1,970<br />

million during <strong>2011</strong> (2010: nil).<br />
