Statement of responsibility by <strong>the</strong> Council for <strong>the</strong> year ended 31<br />
December <strong>2011</strong><br />
The Council is responsible for <strong>the</strong> preparation and fair presentation of <strong>the</strong> consolidated financial statements of <strong>the</strong><br />
University of South Africa, comprising <strong>the</strong> statement of financial position at 31 December <strong>2011</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> statement of<br />
comprehensive income, changes in equity and cash flow for <strong>the</strong> year <strong>the</strong>n ended, and <strong>the</strong> notes to <strong>the</strong> financial statements<br />
which include a summary of significant accounting policies and o<strong>the</strong>r explanatory notes, in accordance with South<br />
African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice, regulations for <strong>Annual</strong> Reporting by Higher Education<br />
Institutions and in terms of <strong>the</strong> requirements of section 41 of <strong>the</strong> Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act No. 101 of 1997),<br />
as amended, and include amounts based on judgements and estimates made by management. In addition, <strong>the</strong> Council<br />
is responsible for preparing <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>report</strong>.<br />
The Council is also responsible for such internal control as <strong>the</strong> Council determine is necessary to enable <strong>the</strong> preparation<br />
of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whe<strong>the</strong>r due to fraud or error, and for maintaining<br />
adequate accounting records and an effective system of risk management.<br />
The Council have made an assessment of <strong>the</strong> ability of <strong>the</strong> University to continue as going concerns and have no reason<br />
to believe that <strong>the</strong> University will not be a going concern in <strong>the</strong> year ahead.<br />
The auditor is responsible for <strong>report</strong>ing on whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> consolidated financial statements are fairly presented in accordance<br />
with <strong>the</strong> applicable financial <strong>report</strong>ing framework.<br />
APPROVAL OF THE CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS<br />
The consolidated financial statements of <strong>the</strong> University of South Africa, as identified in <strong>the</strong> first paragraph, were approved<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Council on 22 June 2012 and signed on its behalf by:<br />
