Research outputs
In 2011 there was a significant increase in outputs in the
form of books, book chapters and conference proceedings,
with a slight decline in journal papers. The number
of research outputs is important for Unisa as it determines
the subsidy that is earned for the university which
in turn influences the cost units that are made available
to colleges for staffing.
Research outputs 2005 – 2011
[Note: The 2011 figures are provisional as research outputs are still being captured and have not yet been audited.]
In 2011 there was 1 515 permanent academic staff,
which equates to a research output per capita of 0.49.
This is similar to 2010. The Unisa Press plays a major
role in dissemination of knowledge through the publication
of books and journals. In 2011, 35 journals and
40 books were published and without these channels,
the number of research outputs would have been much
lower.
