<strong>2011</strong>, Dr C von Eck was duly appointed by <strong>the</strong> Convocation<br />
at a meeting in November <strong>2011</strong> and continues<br />
to sit on <strong>the</strong> Council in this capacity.<br />
The following senior appointments to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Unisa</strong> Management<br />
team were approved by Council in <strong>2011</strong>: Professor<br />
D Singh as <strong>the</strong> Assistant Principal; Professor M<br />
Setati as <strong>the</strong> Vice-Principal: Research and Innovation;<br />
Professor MC Maré as <strong>the</strong> Vice-Principal: Teaching and<br />
Learning; and Dr M Qhobela as <strong>the</strong> Vice-Principal: Institutional<br />
Development. We were unfortunately not able<br />
to fill <strong>the</strong> post of Registrar and <strong>the</strong> term of office of <strong>the</strong><br />
current Registrar has been extended.<br />
Conflict management, resolution<br />
and employee wellness<br />
The institutional character is focussed on dealing with<br />
employee relations and industrial conflict in a positive<br />
and productive manner. The Employee Wellness Division<br />
serves employees on a proactive and reactive needs-<br />

based approach. The nature of <strong>the</strong> cases is diverse and<br />
includes issues resulting in absenteeism, mental health<br />
consequences, stress, trauma and family-related problems,<br />
workplace conflict, and financial and health repercussions.<br />
In 2010 <strong>the</strong> division dealt with 174 employee<br />
assistance requests and in <strong>2011</strong> <strong>the</strong> division attended to<br />
182 cases. In 2010 most of <strong>the</strong> people making use of<br />
employee assistance counselling services were administrative<br />
staff members; however, in <strong>2011</strong> <strong>the</strong>re was a significant<br />
shift with more academic staff making use of <strong>the</strong><br />
services. The primary areas of assistance were claims of<br />
stress and burnout as a result of high workload, depression<br />
impacting on work performance, and interpersonal/intrapersonal/intra-group<br />
conflicts. This is of<br />
concern to Council and will be addressed with Management.<br />
Internal disciplinary cases: <strong>the</strong>re were 34 cases of misconduct<br />
registered as shown in <strong>the</strong> graph below. Thirty<br />
cases of misconduct were finalised in <strong>2011</strong>.
