Procedure 8. Uranium and Plutonium Analysis B. F. Rider, et al (Ref. 332)
—. ,
Outline of Method
Sample of dissolved irradiated fuel contain highly radioactive fission
products. For this reason, U and Pu are separated before analysis. The procedure
described here gives a good yield, together with a good decontamination factor.
Glassware
Distilled cone. HN03 .
2 ~ HN03 - distfiled cone. HN03 , double distilled H20.
U233 solution, standardized.
PU236 solution, standardized.
KBr03 - crystals, reagent grade. Low natural U blank.
8~ NH4N03 in 2 ~ HN03 - Place 200 ml distilled 16 ~ HN03 + 100
ml double distilled H20 in a large beaker. Bubble NH3 gas through
solution until basic to pH paper. Boil off excess NH3 (solution neutral).
Transfer to mixing cylinder, add 50 ml of distflled 16 -M HN03 , dilute
—
to.400 ml. Check density of solution (1.31 * 0.01 @20”C).
Hexone - distilled.
HC1 - C.P. reagent. Low natural U blank.
1 ~ HNo 3 - distilled cone. HN03 , double distiJled H20.
307. H202 - meets A. C. S. specification, low natural U blank.
0.2 ~ TTA in xylene - 4.44 g= TTA dissolved in 100 ml dist~ed
xyl ene.
Xylene - distilled.
Ether - distilled.
0.05 ~ HN09 - distilled cone. HN03 , double distilled H20.
H20 - double distilled.
All glassware used is Pyrex which has been soaked overnight in 50y0
HN03 and rinsed with double distiJled water. Pipets are rinsed with 50% HN03 and
double distilled water before being used.
Separation and Decontamination Procedure
1. Place the aliquot for analysis in a 15-ml cone and evaporate to about
1 ml. Add a suitable U 233 and PU236 spike, one drop cone. nitric
acid, and several KBr O
3+
oxidation of Pu to PU02.
crystals. Allow to stand for 1 hr to allow
2. Add 1.5 ml 8 ~NH4N03 in2 ~HN03, and evaporate to about 2 ml.
3. Prepare two scrub solutions in separate 15-ml cones, containing 1 ml
of 8 ~ NH4N03 in 2 ~ Hh-03 and about 10 mg KBr03 . Preoxidize
about 10 ml Hexone with 2 ml of 2 ~ HN03 and KBr03 . Keep covered
until ready for use.
