(c) Extra Mural. The Department makes about 200 s<strong>in</strong>gle lectures<br />
and demonstrations per annum. In addition to this, a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> kitchen demonstrations are undertaken when the members<br />
meet <strong>in</strong> their own village and a mixture <strong>of</strong> practical and<br />
demonstration work is <strong>in</strong>cluded. Courses are held at centres <strong>in</strong> the<br />
county, aga<strong>in</strong> with the object <strong>of</strong> Basic Certificates_ be<strong>in</strong>g taken.<br />
In addition to this, a great amount <strong>of</strong> adviceis given by letter and on<br />
the telephone, judg<strong>in</strong>g is undertaken at Shows throughout the County<br />
and advice on schedule mak<strong>in</strong>g is given. Members <strong>of</strong> the Department sit<br />
on W.I. and Y.F.C. Committees and a great deal <strong>of</strong> help is given to the<br />
Inter-Organisation Committee, which runs competitions at the Young<br />
Farmers' Show.<br />
RURAL HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT<br />
REPORT FOR 1966-67<br />
Residential Course: A week's Country Housewives' Course was held, 20 members<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g chosen from 80 applications. Members attend<strong>in</strong>g came from the W.I., T.W.G.,<br />
Young Wives and Service Wives Clubs. The ma<strong>in</strong> theme <strong>of</strong> the course was the life <strong>of</strong><br />
women <strong>in</strong> the countryside today, and some very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and search<strong>in</strong>g discussions<br />
were held on this. Practical work was carried out on a variety <strong>of</strong> subjects.<br />
Two courses were held for the W.R.A.C., for their Homecraft Promotion Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
Test, one for a fortnight <strong>in</strong> October, the other for a fortnight <strong>in</strong> February. A total<br />
<strong>of</strong> 17 attend<strong>in</strong>g. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the course, all members took their Promotion Exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
and all passed.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Test Courses were held for women members <strong>of</strong> the Young Farmers' Clubs<br />
<strong>in</strong> Pastry Mak<strong>in</strong>g, Bak<strong>in</strong>g, Frozen Foods, Lampshade Mak<strong>in</strong>g. 53 attended.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Test Courses for W.I. members were held <strong>in</strong>. Meal Cookery, Preservation.<br />
Lampshade Mak<strong>in</strong>g and S<strong>of</strong>t Furnish<strong>in</strong>gs, and for W.I. Demonstrators <strong>in</strong> Cookery,<br />
Preservation and Garden<strong>in</strong>g, 52 attend<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Even<strong>in</strong>g Classes were held <strong>in</strong> Home Made W<strong>in</strong>e at Pewsey, and a craft course<br />
for members <strong>of</strong> Devizes Townswomen's Guild had 14 attend<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
At Home Days: Dur<strong>in</strong>g the Spr<strong>in</strong>g Term, the policy <strong>of</strong> At Home Days on Fridays for<br />
women's organisations was cont<strong>in</strong>ued, 567 women attend<strong>in</strong>g from W.I.'s, T.W.G.'s,<br />
Young Wives, Young Farmers, Service Wives Clubs and the Farmers' Wives Club.<br />
Special <strong>in</strong>terest was shown <strong>in</strong> the Deep Freeze Days when the latest <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
ga<strong>in</strong>ed by two members <strong>of</strong> staff attend<strong>in</strong>g the Long Ashton Deep Freeze Course was<br />
put to full use.
