The first Further <strong>Education</strong> Sub-Committee <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wiltshire</strong> was set up <strong>in</strong> 1949,<br />

with Mr Shawcross as F.E. Officer. The <strong>Wiltshire</strong> Authority, however, elected<br />

to cont<strong>in</strong>ue with its <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Sub-Committee until 1963 rather<br />

than allow <strong>Lackham</strong> itself to be adm<strong>in</strong>istered by the F.E. Sub-Committee. This<br />

decision could have been due to the fact that the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Agriculture grant<br />

aided all the Colleges and Farm Institutes and that Further <strong>Education</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> outside the Institutes, was grant aided by the M<strong>in</strong>istry<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>. Mr Gover, the efficient Officer responsible to the <strong>Agricultural</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong> Sub-Committee for adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>in</strong> those days, must have found the<br />

division <strong>of</strong> grant aid between the M<strong>in</strong>istries <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and <strong>Education</strong> very<br />

confus<strong>in</strong>g and difficult.<br />

Most counties formed Further <strong>Education</strong> Sub-Committees, and Regional<br />

Advisory Councils were established as advisory and consultative bodies, and a<br />

Secretary appo<strong>in</strong>ted for each region. Sub-Committees were set up <strong>in</strong> each<br />

region to consider all matters relat<strong>in</strong>g to specific subjects, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Agricultural</strong> and Horticultural <strong>Education</strong>. For <strong>Agricultural</strong> matters, <strong>Wiltshire</strong><br />

was <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the South and South Western regions, with Headquarters at<br />

Read<strong>in</strong>g and Bristol respectively. The <strong>Agricultural</strong> Committees consisted <strong>of</strong><br />

representatives from the various organisations relat<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>in</strong>dustry: N.F.U.,<br />

N.U.A.W. etc., together with the Further <strong>Education</strong> Officers and Pr<strong>in</strong>cipals <strong>of</strong><br />

Farm Institutes <strong>in</strong> the region f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g the whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Farm Institutes.<br />

In view <strong>of</strong> the rapid growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lackham</strong> and its importance <strong>in</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong>, the County <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Sub-Committee was disbanded and<br />

was succeeded by the <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and Farm Institute Sub-Committee,<br />

with Mr F Swanton as Chairman.[*]<br />
