A central body called the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong> Exam<strong>in</strong>ations was established to<br />
advise on the rationalisation <strong>of</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ations„ [i]<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Lackham</strong> enjoyed a high reputation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Farm<br />
Mach<strong>in</strong>ery and well-conducted courses <strong>in</strong> Agriculture, the Governors and staff<br />
decided to apply to the National Council <strong>of</strong> Exam<strong>in</strong>ations to arrange a three year<br />
0.N.D. Course <strong>in</strong> Farm Mechanisation, designed for young men who wished to<br />
become technicians or unit managers on large farms etc.<br />
A suitable scheme <strong>of</strong> work and syllabus were presented and the course was<br />
approved by the Council and Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and Science <strong>in</strong> 1969. The<br />
first course commenced <strong>in</strong> September 1970, with 17 students.<br />
The Governors were grateful to Col. Littlewood and the National Farmers' Union<br />
for f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g suitably equipped farms <strong>in</strong> the County for the students' practical<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the second year <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />
The Report also suggested that there would be no objection to Schools and<br />
Institutes with a wide range <strong>of</strong> work apply<strong>in</strong>g the term "College", hence<br />
LACKHAM COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE.<br />
At a farewell D<strong>in</strong>ner, Mr J M Stratton described how the year 1970 marked the<br />
end <strong>of</strong> an "epoch" <strong>in</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> the County.<br />
The County <strong>Agricultural</strong> Executive Committee and the County <strong>Agricultural</strong><br />
Technical Development Committee were abandoned.<br />
Mrs M Moncrieffe, Secretary <strong>of</strong> both Committees mentioned above -<br />
retired.<br />
Mr W J Brimacombe, Chief County National <strong>Agricultural</strong> Advisory Officer<br />
retired after 27 years' service - succeeded by Mr J Mathews.<br />
Mr J 0 Thomas, Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lackham</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and County<br />
<strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Officer, retired after 22 years' service -<br />
succeeded by Mr P Walters.[i]
