In 1963, it was decided to set up a Govern<strong>in</strong>g Body for <strong>Lackham</strong> to take over<br />

from the <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and Farm Institute Sub-Committee,<br />

which meant that:<br />

(a) Those matters relat<strong>in</strong>g to the governance <strong>of</strong> '<strong>Lackham</strong> and<br />

admission <strong>of</strong> students went to the Govern<strong>in</strong>g Body.<br />

(b) Items concern<strong>in</strong>g awards went to the Scholarship and Awards<br />

Sub-Committee.<br />

(c) Matters deal<strong>in</strong>g with the general issues relat<strong>in</strong>g to Agri<br />

cultural and Horticultural <strong>Education</strong> went to the Further<br />

<strong>Education</strong> Sub-Committee.<br />

The Govern<strong>in</strong>g Body <strong>in</strong> this way was placed on a par with the Govern<strong>in</strong>g Bodies <strong>of</strong><br />

the four major Technical Colleges, report<strong>in</strong>g to the Further <strong>Education</strong><br />

Committee.<br />

The Governors <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lackham</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Agriculture consisted <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Education</strong> and Further <strong>Education</strong> Committees and other bodies connected with<br />

the Industry.<br />

Mr F Swanton was unanimously elected Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Governors. In 1967, he<br />

wished to retire as Chairman <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> a younger person. He had been<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> every Committee directly connected with <strong>Lackham</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce its <strong>in</strong>ception<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1946 - twenty-one years <strong>of</strong> devoted and unselfish service, To mark his<br />

retirement, he was presented with a Silver Salver by the Old Students'<br />

Association at their Annual D<strong>in</strong>ner, and the School's 21 st anniversary, <strong>in</strong> 1967. In<br />

1961 he was awarded the well deserved honour <strong>of</strong> O.B.E. for his services to<br />

Agriculture. He was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wiltshire</strong>'s successful farmers and his last words to<br />

the Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal were "Farm well, don't overstock, and keep the Estate tidy". What<br />

words <strong>of</strong> wisdom and foresight.<br />

Mr J M Stratton <strong>of</strong> Stockton Manor Farm was elected to succeed Mr Swanton as<br />

Chairman: another well-known farmer who had served on many committees<br />

connected with <strong>Lackham</strong> and Chairman <strong>of</strong> the County <strong>Agricultural</strong> Technical<br />

Development Committee. [i]<br />
