Permanent pasture - 74 acres <strong>of</strong> permanent pasture are liable to flood or are too<br />

steep to <strong>in</strong>corporate <strong>in</strong> the ley farm<strong>in</strong>g system. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 50% acres are used<br />

for beef and sheep paddocks, or graz<strong>in</strong>g for the dairy herds and followers.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the barley is kept as livestock feed, and the wheat sold partly for seed, and<br />

some for feed. Both early and ma<strong>in</strong>crop varieties <strong>of</strong> potatoes are grown.<br />

Grass, kale, silage and hay provide ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and one gallon for the dairy cows, and<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> all followers. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the graz<strong>in</strong>g season, grass provides a m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> two<br />

gallons <strong>of</strong> milk per cow daily, and an early start is made <strong>in</strong> the Spr<strong>in</strong>g with the use <strong>of</strong><br />

Italian Ryegrass leys. [i]<br />

EXPERIMENTS AND FIELD TRIALS<br />

Many orig<strong>in</strong>al experiments and trials have been conducted on the College<br />

farm over the "ears <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the National <strong>Agricultural</strong> Advisorv Service and<br />

commercial firms; members <strong>of</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g staff and students have usually<br />

undertaken the responsibility and work <strong>in</strong>volved. Such projects are an excellent<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g aid and develop <strong>in</strong> the student an enquir<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>d, enhance his th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

capacity and powers <strong>of</strong> operation and <strong>of</strong>t times read<strong>in</strong>g. [i]<br />

Conservation <strong>of</strong> grass by deep freeze<br />

Irrigation <strong>of</strong> grassland and early potatoes<br />

Trials with Charolais cattle for M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Agriculture<br />

Nitrogen application trials on grassland and cereals <strong>in</strong> conjunction with<br />
