children. She was created a Marchesa by the Pope. She purchased the <strong>Lackham</strong><br />

estate <strong>in</strong> 1866 from Mr. Caldwell for £46,000, 585 acres. She died 22nd<br />

December 1883.<br />

SIR GEORGE ERRINGTON, BT.<br />

He was co-trustee and probably a relative <strong>of</strong> the Marchesa and seems to have<br />

lived at <strong>Lackham</strong> as a life tenant. He was born <strong>in</strong> 1839, and died <strong>in</strong> 1920.<br />

BRIGADIER GENERAL G. LL. PALMER, D.L.<br />

Born 1856. He bought the estate <strong>of</strong> 585 acres for £17,652 <strong>in</strong> 1893 from Sir<br />

George Err<strong>in</strong>gton, and let it to a Mrs Taylor, not liv<strong>in</strong>g there until about 1900.<br />

He built the stables about 1900-02. He was a D.L., and High Sheriff <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Wiltshire</strong>, 1903. M.P. for Westbury, 1918-22. He added considerably to the<br />

estate. He was married with issue, and died <strong>in</strong> 1932.<br />

THE LORD GLANELY, D.L.<br />

Sir William James Tatem, St., 1st Baron (cr. 1918). Born 1868. He purchased<br />

the <strong>Lackham</strong> estate <strong>in</strong> 1919 from Brig. General Palmer for £62,000, about 1469<br />

acres. He married Ada Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas Williams <strong>of</strong> Cardiff. No heir.<br />

High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> Glamorgan, 1911-12. A shipp<strong>in</strong>g magnate, and famous racehorse<br />

owner.<br />

MAJOR HERBERT PATON HOLT, M.C.<br />

Born <strong>in</strong> Montreal, 1890 <strong>of</strong> Irish descent, eldest son <strong>of</strong> Sir Herbert Holt.<br />

President <strong>of</strong> the Royal Bank <strong>of</strong> Canada.<br />

Jo<strong>in</strong>ed the 3rd Dragoon Guards, 1910. Married Ada Elizabeth Cairns <strong>of</strong><br />

Montreal, and had one son and two daughters. M.P. for Upton Division <strong>of</strong> West<br />

Ham 1924-29. High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wiltshire</strong>, 1935-36. Bought <strong>Lackham</strong> estate<br />

from Lord Glanely, approximately 1469 acres for £78,000 <strong>in</strong> 1927, and a few<br />

months later <strong>of</strong>fered outly<strong>in</strong>g portions 1030 acres for sale, reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g only 440<br />

acres. He was the last private owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lackham</strong>. His only son, Lt. G H P Holt,<br />

Royal Armoured Corps, attached 9th Lancers, waskilled <strong>in</strong> action <strong>in</strong> Italy, 25th<br />

November, 1944, aged 21. Memorial tablet to him and to his mother (who died <strong>in</strong><br />

1945) <strong>in</strong> the Lackhani Chapel <strong>in</strong> Lacock Church,<br />

WILTSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL<br />

In 1945, Major Holt sold the estate, about 600 acres for £42,500, to the<br />

<strong>Wiltshire</strong> County Council, s<strong>in</strong>ce when it has become the <strong>Lackham</strong> College <strong>of</strong><br />

Agriculture.[i]
