SIR ROBERT BAYNARD, KT.<br />

Second, but eldest surviv<strong>in</strong>g son, born 1563. M.P. for Chippenham, 1584-85, and<br />

for Westbury, 1586—87. James I visited him at <strong>Lackham</strong>, and <strong>in</strong> 1618 knighted<br />

him at Theobalds. 1629 High Sheriff <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wiltshire</strong>. By his wife, Ursula (1587-<br />

1623) daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Stapleton, and Dame Olive (nee Shar<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>of</strong><br />

Lacock Abbey; by her first marriage, Mrs. John Talbot) he had two children,<br />

Edward who died an <strong>in</strong>fant, 1617. and Mary, born <strong>in</strong> 1621.<br />

Lady Baynard's memorial, also en an oak panel, is <strong>in</strong> Lacock Church. Sir Robert<br />

died 1636. (His Inventory gives a good picture <strong>of</strong> the rooms and their contents.)<br />

CAPTAIN THE HON. JAMES MONTAGU<br />

(Arms: Argent, three lozenges conjo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> fesse gules, with<strong>in</strong> a bordure sable)<br />

Born 1609. Third son <strong>of</strong> Henry, First Earl <strong>of</strong> Manchester. Married the heiress<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Lackham</strong> &c., Mary Baynard, <strong>in</strong> Lacock Church <strong>in</strong> 1635. They had eleven sons<br />

and two daughters. He died 1665-66. His widow "Ye Honoured Mary<br />

Mountague" died 1685.<br />

JAMES MONTAGU, ESQUIRE (II)<br />

Second, but eldest surviv<strong>in</strong>g son. Born 1638. 1671 he married Diana, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Anthony Hungerford <strong>of</strong> Black Bourton, and later <strong>of</strong> Farleigh Castle. They had<br />

four sons. He died March, 1675-76. His widow died 1736. Tablet on East wall <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Lackham</strong> Chapel to them, and to their sons.<br />

EDWARD MONTAGU, ESQUIRE<br />

Eldest son, born 1672. Died 1710. Never married. Noth<strong>in</strong>g is known <strong>of</strong> him, and<br />

he was probably physically weak.<br />

JAMES MONTAGU, ESQUIRE (III)<br />

Brother <strong>of</strong> the above, born 1673. He seems to have early succeeded to<br />

<strong>Lackham</strong>. He married Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir John Eyles, Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong><br />

London, the owner <strong>of</strong> Southbroom, Devizes. They had five sons and three<br />

daughters. He died 1747, his wife had died 1741. Their names occur on the<br />

same tablet as James Montagu(II).<br />

JAMES MONTAGU, ESQUIRE (IV)<br />

Eldest son <strong>of</strong> the above, born 1713. 1744 he married El<strong>in</strong>or,daughter and<br />

heiress <strong>of</strong> William Hedges <strong>of</strong> Alderton, <strong>Wiltshire</strong>, and had four sons and n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

daughters. (In 1790 August, Grimm made a draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the old manor house <strong>of</strong>
