CHAPTER V<br />

COURSES OF STUDY<br />

1970<br />

All courses at <strong>Lackham</strong> have been designed over the years to meet the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

students enter<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Agricultural</strong> and <strong>Agricultural</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Industries with<strong>in</strong><br />

the region. Care has been taken to consult representatives from the Industries and<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Boards <strong>in</strong>volved when fram<strong>in</strong>g the syllabus content, which must always<br />

be flexible and revised from time to time.<br />

Full -Time Courses<br />

Course A. One Year Courses <strong>in</strong> General Agriculture for men and women <strong>in</strong>troduced<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1946, and a National Certificate awarded to successful students<br />

from 1957 onwards.<br />

The students spend at least half their work<strong>in</strong>g time on the farm <strong>in</strong> order that the<br />

classroom study may be closely related to the practical work carried out. An<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegral part <strong>of</strong> the course also consists <strong>of</strong> visits to farms, factories, research<br />

stations etc., to study particular problems <strong>in</strong> connection with production and<br />

management.<br />

Candidates for admission should preferably be 17 years <strong>of</strong> age or over. Evidence <strong>of</strong> a<br />

sound general education will be required <strong>of</strong> each entrant and no student will be<br />

accepted who has not carried out practical agricultural work entail<strong>in</strong>g at least one<br />

complete year on a farm, but at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the Committee certa<strong>in</strong> exceptions<br />

can be made to this rule.<br />

Preference given to candidates resident <strong>in</strong> the County <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wiltshire</strong>, but students<br />

from other counties may be admitted provided accommodation is available.<br />

Course B. One Year Supplementary Course <strong>in</strong> Farm Mach<strong>in</strong>ery and Crop<br />

Husbandry <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> L952.<br />

This course <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g has been approved by the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and<br />

Science, the South West Regional Council for Further <strong>Education</strong> and the Southern<br />

Council for Further <strong>Education</strong>.<br />

<strong>in</strong> this course there is a close relationship between the study <strong>of</strong> the actual crop and<br />

the mach<strong>in</strong>ery used to deal with it from beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to end. In addition to the<br />

theoretical work given at the <strong>Lackham</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, students spend one day<br />

and even<strong>in</strong>g per week dur<strong>in</strong>g the course at the College <strong>of</strong> Further <strong>Education</strong> at
