Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Board has <strong>in</strong>creased the number <strong>of</strong> entrants attend<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the craft<br />
skills. With pay premiums for craft status, there has been a greater awareness <strong>of</strong><br />
the advantages accru<strong>in</strong>g to qualifications though the 'academic' exam<strong>in</strong>ation courses<br />
are not accepted by the <strong>Agricultural</strong> Wages Board as a measure <strong>of</strong> skill atta<strong>in</strong>ment.<br />
In 1976, 'guestimated' proportions <strong>of</strong> full-time staff who entered horticultural<br />
employment over the previous 10 years who have received some full-time tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or<br />
education are:-<br />
Local Authority and District Council 60 per cent<br />
Commercial Horticulture 30 per cent<br />
Part—time Commercial Horticulturists 10 per cent<br />
There has been a chang<strong>in</strong>g pattern <strong>of</strong> qualifications at entry, from ma<strong>in</strong>ly nonacademic<br />
students with no Ord<strong>in</strong>ary Level passes <strong>in</strong> the early 1960's, through a<br />
gradual improvement to <strong>in</strong>clude those with an easy capacity to express themselves on<br />
paper, but there has rema<strong>in</strong>ed a hard core <strong>of</strong> entrants to horticulture whose<br />
employability <strong>in</strong> some years will be severely restricted by their poor show<strong>in</strong>g with the<br />
three R's. The advent <strong>of</strong> the multiple choice questionnaire type <strong>of</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
paper has aided the weak entrant as the Stage I level <strong>in</strong> the City and Guilds<br />
Horticulture exam<strong>in</strong>ations [i]<br />
