SUMMARY OF THE HISTORY OF AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION IN<br />

WILTSHIRE<br />

1902-1922. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this period <strong>Agricultural</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wiltshire</strong> consisted<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>struction and demonstrations <strong>in</strong> the basic skills:-hedge lay<strong>in</strong>g, land<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>age, horse plough<strong>in</strong>g, thatch<strong>in</strong>g, milk<strong>in</strong>g, poultry, beekeep<strong>in</strong>g etc.<br />

Travell<strong>in</strong>g schools were <strong>in</strong>troduced whereby part-time <strong>in</strong>structors travelled<br />

from district to district demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g on selected farms. "On the farm<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g" is an efficient method <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and it is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d the<br />

<strong>Agricultural</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Board adopt<strong>in</strong>g somewhat similar methods <strong>in</strong> 1976.<br />

A typical example <strong>of</strong> a travell<strong>in</strong>g school was conducted <strong>in</strong> butter and<br />

cheesemak<strong>in</strong>g by Mrs Ida Bull, who travelled from farm to farm <strong>in</strong>struct<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

housewives. When the Committee discont<strong>in</strong>ued the travell<strong>in</strong>g schools, Mrs Bull<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued her work on a voluntary basis and. formed the "<strong>Wiltshire</strong> Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dairy Students" with branches scattered throughout the County. Mrs Bull<br />

was a unique and dynamic personality and devoted the whole <strong>of</strong> her retired life<br />

to the well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the Association Follow<strong>in</strong>g her death <strong>in</strong> 1973, the W.A.D.S.<br />

changed the name <strong>of</strong> the Association to the "<strong>Wiltshire</strong> Farmers' Club".<br />

There was no systematic theoretical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Agriculture <strong>in</strong> the County<br />

except at Dauntseys School, West Lav<strong>in</strong>gton, where the subject was <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong><br />

the school curriculum. Scholarships were awarded by the <strong>Wiltshire</strong> County<br />

Council to suitable candidates to attend such courses and <strong>in</strong> 1976 many<br />

progressive <strong>Wiltshire</strong> farmers are seen wear<strong>in</strong>g the Old Boys' School tie.<br />

In 1922, Mr R Boutflour was appo<strong>in</strong>ted full-time <strong>Agricultural</strong> Organiser for<br />

<strong>Wiltshire</strong> with Headquarters at Polebarn House, Trowbridge. He lectured to<br />

large audiences <strong>of</strong> farmers on Animal Nutrition, with special reference to the<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> dairy cows. He advocated less roots and more concentrates<br />

(accord<strong>in</strong>g to yield) <strong>in</strong> the cow's daily w<strong>in</strong>ter ration. His theory met with great<br />

success, at the same time break<strong>in</strong>g a long tradition. In 1926, he left <strong>Wiltshire</strong><br />

to direct research work on the feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> livestock for the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong><br />

Agriculture. Later <strong>in</strong> 1931, he became Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> the Royal <strong>Agricultural</strong><br />

College, Cirencester, and dur<strong>in</strong>g the War, he served as County <strong>Agricultural</strong><br />

Executive Officer for Gloucestershire.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g Mr Boutflour's term <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice, several assistants were appo<strong>in</strong>ted:-Mr W<br />

T Price <strong>in</strong> 1924, Mr H Toml<strong>in</strong>son <strong>in</strong> 1926, Mr J F H Thomas and Ralph Whiteman<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1928. Mr Price succeeded Mr Boutflour as County <strong>Agricultural</strong> Organiser <strong>in</strong><br />

1926.
