In 1652, Bligh's book mentioned the importance <strong>of</strong> irrigation or "drown<strong>in</strong>g" the<br />
land by digg<strong>in</strong>g trenches <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter and br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the water from the nearest river<br />
or stream. The water was allowed to flow evenly over the grass for a short time<br />
and quickly dra<strong>in</strong>ed away by means <strong>of</strong> deep dra<strong>in</strong>s. He advocated w<strong>in</strong>dmill pumps<br />
to lift water where gravity was not possible.<br />
1653 Sir Richard Weston <strong>in</strong>troduced lucerne, clovers and sa<strong>in</strong>fo<strong>in</strong>.<br />
1720 Jethro Tull, Berkshire, <strong>in</strong>vented the corn drill and horse hoe and<br />

1776 Coke <strong>of</strong> Holkham, the Earl <strong>of</strong> Leicester, improved his poor Norfolk<br />
soil by "marl<strong>in</strong>g". He also established a f<strong>in</strong>e herd <strong>of</strong> South Down<br />
sheep and Red Devon cattle. He was a good landlord and taught his<br />
tenants.<br />
