POLICY ENV9A SITES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL
SIGNIFICANCE
Proposals for development affecting national, regional or locally
important archaeological sites and their settings; whether scheduled or
unscheduled, will only be permitted where: proposals can demonstrate
that the archaeological interest is capable of being preserved in situ and
without damage to its setting. If this is not merited, where the reasons
for the proposal outweigh the intrinsic importance of the site/remains or
the setting of the feature and there is no reasonable alternative site or
solution to accommodate the development proposed, then the developer
must agree to an appropriate level of investigation and recording prior to
and during development and the subsequent analysis and publication of
results and curation of remains.
For proposals that require evaluation of sites where archaeological
remains are likely to exist developers are required to undertake an
assessment/survey to establish the nature, condition or significance of
any remains prior to the determination of any planning applications.
POLICY ENV9 SITES OF NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL
IMPORTANCE
There is a presumption in favour of the preservation of nationally
important archaeological remains. Development proposals which would
have an adverse impact on the integrity or setting of a Scheduled
Ancient Monument or other nationally important sites or remains will not
be permitted.
Proposals will only be permitted where the archaeological interest is
capable of being preserved in situ and without damage to it or its setting.
POLICY ENV10 OTHER SITES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL
IMPORTANCE
Development proposals affecting regionally or locally important
archaeological sites or remains and their settings will only be permitted
where the archaeological interest is capable of being preserved without
damage in situ.
Development proposals which would have an adverse effect on any such
site will only be permitted where:
a)the reasons for the proposal outweigh the intrinsic importance of the
site/remains or the setting of the feature; and
b)there is no reasonable alternative site or solution to accommodate the
development proposed; and
developers agree to an appropriate level of investigation and recording
prior to and during development and the subsequent analysis and
publication of results and curation of remains.
