POLICY ENV9A SITES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL<br />

SIGNIFICANCE<br />

Proposals for development affecting national, regional or locally<br />

important archaeological sites and their settings; whether scheduled or<br />

unscheduled, will only be permitted where: proposals can demonstrate<br />

that the archaeological interest is capable of being preserved in situ and<br />

without damage to its setting. If this is not merited, where the reasons<br />

for the proposal outweigh the intrinsic importance of the site/remains or<br />

the setting of the feature and there is no reasonable alternative site or<br />

solution to accommodate the development proposed, then the developer<br />

must agree to an appropriate level of investigation and recording prior to<br />

and during development and the subsequent analysis and publication of<br />

results and curation of remains.<br />

For proposals that require evaluation of sites where archaeological<br />

remains are likely to exist developers are required to undertake an<br />

assessment/survey to establish the nature, condition or significance of<br />

any remains prior to the determination of any planning applications.<br />

POLICY ENV9 SITES OF NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL<br />

IMPORTANCE<br />

There is a presumption in favour of the preservation of nationally<br />

important archaeological remains. Development proposals which would<br />

have an adverse impact on the integrity or setting of a Scheduled<br />

Ancient Monument or other nationally important sites or remains will not<br />

be permitted.<br />

Proposals will only be permitted where the archaeological interest is<br />

capable of being preserved in situ and without damage to it or its setting.<br />

POLICY ENV10 OTHER SITES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL<br />

IMPORTANCE<br />

Development proposals affecting regionally or locally important<br />

archaeological sites or remains and their settings will only be permitted<br />

where the archaeological interest is capable of being preserved without<br />

damage in situ.<br />

Development proposals which would have an adverse effect on any such<br />

site will only be permitted where:<br />

a)the reasons for the proposal outweigh the intrinsic importance of the<br />

site/remains or the setting of the feature; and<br />

b)there is no reasonable alternative site or solution to accommodate the<br />

development proposed; and<br />

developers agree to an appropriate level of investigation and recording<br />

prior to and during development and the subsequent analysis and<br />

publication of results and curation of remains.<br />
