1. NGO historical aspects
- Incorporated by an Act of Parliament.
2. Organizational aspects
- East New Britain (mainly Kokopo and Gazelle Districts)
- As their affiliates they have representatives of women groups: nurses,
businesswomen, policewomen, community and churches representatives.
3. Networking and institutional relations
- It is part of the National Council of Women.
- They also integrate the Family and Sexual Violence Committee (within the CIMC)
4. Juridical and legal aspects
- It was incorporated by an Act of Parliament, as part of the National Council of Women:
it is an Association open for membership.
- It is present in the correspondent Assembly (in this case the Provincial) with the right
to vote, as guaranteed in the Organic Law of 1995.
- (In the same Assembly there are other appointed representatives: churches, NGOs,
youth – also with the right to vote – but the women representative is the only one
voted by its members and not appointed.)
5. Financial aspects
- Normally they would receive funds from the Provincial administration, but not for the
last 5 years. They’ve also received previously funds from AusAID, UNIFEM (for the
literacy program) – but no funds for the last 3 years.
- (Some other councils from other provinces receive funds from the Provincial
authorities, but they haven’t)
- EU funding: never aware of the Call for Proposals (CfP).
6. Activities and sectors
Four main Programs:
Literacy/peer education
Health (for village health volunteers, birth attendants)
HIV/AIDS
Rural women
Activities:
- Training, advocacy campaigns.
- Also advocacy for men and data collection on sexual related issues.
- Counselling for victims.
