Ms Bagore Cecilia Progaram Co-ordinator Location: Paragon, west of Goroka, EHP Date: 30 th of August, 2010 History The Mount Sion Centre for Disabled Persons is situted in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, PNG. The Centre was first found by the Brotheres of the Congregation of the Christian Brothers (PNG) in 1982. Mount Sion is a Catholic institution owned by the Catholic Diocese of Goroka and is administered under the guidance of the Christian Brothers as part of the Callan service network for the persons with disabilities The main goal at Mt Sion Centre for Disabled Persons is targeted to improving the quality of life of the people (especially children) with disabilities with care, education, training and awareness as well as advocating for the equal human rights. Moreover, this institution aims to educate and rehabilitate the whole person – spiritually, physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. We endeavour to integrate those with disabilities into a wider community so that they too may live normal lives. Organisational Aspects Mt Sion has 40 staff members: 16 teachers The rest are CBM officers, Administrators, Grounds and securities They some times took on board some volunteers to assist in the implementation of the programs. Networking and Institutional Relations Mt Sion has good network with Callan National Unit based in Wewak. Callan has a connection with Christofell Blinden Mission (CBM from Germay) and CBM also has a connection with European Union. Mt Sion Callan Services CBM EU Mt Sion has resource centres in 18 provinces - Goroka, Wewak, Rabaul, Hagen, Daru... It is a formally registered and recognised educational institution. It works in partnerships with the education dsepartment, operating just as one of the government or privately runned institution under the bylaws of education department and Catholic Church. The institution has teaching staffs and board members just anyother institutions around the places. Financial Aspects In terms of finance, funding comes from: The Catholic Church Education Department Community Development Health Department The estimated annual budget is up to K1 million (actually 7 – 8 hundred thousand kina). That is, including all the expenses (wages, assets, maintenance and programs) Activities and Sectors The main programs undertaken are: Special Inclusive Education (IE) Community Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR) Deafness Education Braille resource and Production Optical services and Eye clinic Mental hrealth program Life skills and vocational training 85
