BITAPAKA THEATRE GROUP ALPHONSE TUPIA THEATRE DIRECTOR 723 93905 - GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE The Bitapaka Theatre Group is a provincial based organisation. HISTORY On the 26 th of August 1987, People of South Pacific (PSP) carried out awareness in social issue, domestic violence, gender equality, drug abuse, environment, health issues including HIV/AIDS, Issues on good governance, corruption. When it started its operations, it had 25 members, and today it has only has 10 members because they wanted to break away. HUMAN RESOURCES There are a total of ten (10) staff members, eight (8) boys and two (2) girls. And they all volunteers. The internal structure of the organisation is a simple one; you have the director, then the trainer, and the actors and actresses. They do it as a full-time job. NETWORKING AND INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS Yes the organisation is a member of a network with ENBSEK, ENBSHIP, PROVINCIAL AIDS COUNCIL, CARGO DESTRUCTION, GOVERNMENT AGENCES, DISTRICT HEALTH, EDUCATION, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, and AND ADRA. JUDICIAL ASPECTS Yes the organisation is registered, but there is no law or regulation against their operations. And all the positions/jobs are fixed or permanent positions. FINANCING AND FUNDING ASPECTS Financing mostly comes from government departments such as Education for example, the National Book Week for awareness done in schools, the Provincial AIDS Council gives funds to run awareness’s, and in return there has to be financial reports to the departments. MAIN SECTORS EDUCATION AND HEALTH SECTOR MAIN ACTIVITIES The main activity is mostly awareness in the form of plays or dramas. 42
DOVE SANCTUARY WOMEN’S HOME KATHLEEN ORIS WHILLEM PROGRAM MANAGER -982 8617 -7280 7976 - GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE Its geographical scope in the province is mostly in the Lassul Baining, Gazelle District, Kokopo District, Duke of York Island, and to Lihir Island HISTORY The organisation was established in 2004 in the Highlands Region. And after one year, it was established in East New Britain Province in 2005. The main objective was to provide an avenue to all mothers for legal advice who could not stand for their own rights in court. And therefore, the organisation tried to educate them about Constitutional Rights. The organisation started with only two (2) people, and now has over 600 members or supporters. HUMAN RESOURCES There is a director, one EO, Three field officers, and one secretary. And it is mostly volunteer based. And the internal structure of the organisation is have a BOD on top, then director, then the EO Implementers, etc. of general management NETWORKING AND INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS Yes, the organisation is part of a network, like with the social action groups, stakeholders, catholic mothers, council of women, and department of police, community justice liaison officer, and Melanesian centre for NGOs Leadership. JUDICIAL ASPECTS The organisation is operated under certain bylaws of the community development, and by the police bylaws, and is also registered under IPA, and is recognised by provincial government. In electing the board, it usually done as invitational thing, and if they accept to be part of the board of the organisation, then the general public will be informed about the appointments. FINANCING AND FUNDING ASPECTS Most of the funds come from the sale of ice blocks, meri blous, and also from the Democratic Governance for Media grant, for example, in 2007, K20 000 grants was given for the march against pornography. MAIN SECTORS Legal sector MAIN ACTIVITIES Training empowerment, conflict resolution (mediation), medical examination, court representation, awareness, weekly radio program, and the main beneficiaries are the women. 43
