NGO historical aspects - Born 1995 – since then it has been growing in size and relevance 2. Organizational aspects - Office in Port Moresby with local partners (NGOs, Media) in the Provinces. - 12 permanent staff in POM. 3. Networking and institutional relations - They are the Peak body for media in the country. Include the main stream media – net, radio, tv, press – with some associate members (non stream media), plus several institutions (research, universities, development partners). - They collaborate with Transparency International and CIMC. 4. Juridical and legal aspects 5. Financial aspects - They receive funds from AusAID. UN and EUD give money for specific projects and pay them fees when the Media Council manages their events. - They tried to apply for EU funds for NSA but drop it because the procedure was too bureaucratic. - They have corporate partners and sponsors who finance their media awards and conferences. 6. Activities and sectors Main goal: strengthening the media, foment media freedom and independency, while conducting projects on cross-cutting issues (mainly awareness): HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, climate change. Activities: Media development initiative Advocacy and regulation enabling media environment Media research and analysis Professionalization of the media Improving financial sustainability of the media organizations Development Communication Initiative Workshops and discussions Advocacy for best practices Participatory communication Business Support Group (also to generate funds for the Council) Communications Services (communications strategies, etc.) Training and consultation They used to give Media grants, which were funded by the AusAID 48

Networking and institutional relations It has an extended network of NGOs in the Provinces. Work closely with the National AIDS Council on awareness campaigns. 4. Juridical and legal aspects 5. Financial aspects Fund raising, private contributions, Transparency International. 6. Activities and sectors - Main sectors: Corruption, Youth, Elections (campaigns on the recently created limited preferential voting system). - The coalition is focused on major awareness campaigns throughout the country, including rural remote areas. 49
