GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE
VSA geographical scope is from local communities in East New Britain and organisations, and in the
Autonomous Region of Bougainville, West New Britain and New Ireland Province.
HISTORY
Volunteer Service Abroad was founded by a group of New Zealanders fifty (50) years ago. And it was
only in 2007, that it was established in East New Britain Province. The original objective for the
Organisation was it saw a need for capacity building of local organisations.
HUMAN RESOURCES
In VSA, there is currently one (1) employed person, and twelve (12) volunteers, all are New
Zealanders. The internal structure of the organisation is that it has its Board at the top, then the CEO,
then the four (4) managers of the four different programs that the organisation offers.
NETWORKING AND INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONS
VSA is member of a network system, and that is with the local NGOs, International Development
Agencies, etc.
JUDICIAL ASPECTS
VSA is officially recognised by the National Government, and is operating in the country based on the
MOU signed between VSA and the PNG Government. The CEO usually has a three year term while
the staffs are on employment contracts.
FINANCING AND FUNDING ASPECTS
Most of the funding towards VSA comes from the New Zealand Government.
MAIN SECTORS: The main sectors of the VSA are based on their four (4) main programs, namely;
social development, economic development, education, and health.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
VSA main activities would include, capacity building, service delivery, awareness, advocacy, etc.
