13.0 Waste Hierarchy and Waste Minimisation at Source
13.0.1 Producing sites will be required to demonstrate that the waste hierarchy has
been applied to the waste prior to acceptance by the landfill.
Avoid – Wastes are not generated if this is feasible, for example, maintaining
separation of clean and radioactive materials in a building rather than
deliberately mixing the wastes to produce a larger volume of lower
concentration material.
Segregate – For example through application of BPM methods to
characterise waste into exempt and LLW waste streams rather than mixing.
Prevent Spread – For example, preventing the spread of contamination to
clean materials.
Recycle/Reuse – For example, reuse of contaminated or activated concrete
as a construction material within the nuclear industry.
Clearance, Exemption and Exclusion – For example, use of the good
practice to sort materials into classifications that can be defined as nonradioactive
waste for the purposes of disposal.
Volume Reduction – For example, compacting wastes which are
compactable to reduce disposal volume.
