Mendes on Lisbon
“If you look at any atlas, you will see
that Lisbon is not at the far end of
Europe – it is the centre of the world.
The city’s greatest charm is that it’s
a mix of an imperial capital and a
village. I love the light, the poetry and
the humanity. There are many
beautiful viewpoints here, but my
favourite thing to do is to take a ferry
to the other side of the Tejo (Tagus)
River and watch the sunset.”
Mendes’s moving documentary José and Pilar was
Portugal’s submission for the 2012 Best Foreign
