NAME PARIS-CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT
BUILT 1974–2003
Blade Runner has nothing on this airport’s crazy
design, which was so far ahead of its time when it was
built in the 1970s that we’ve still not quite caught up.
Developed by architect Paul Andreu, Charles de Gaulle
was conceived as a radical new airport model. Terminal
2, shown here, consists of a “village” of mini-terminals,
linked by underground passageways.
WHAT BARCELONA
EL PRAT AIRPORT,
TERMINAL 2
BUILT 1970
Terminal 2 might not look
special from the inside,
but step outside and
you’ll be dazzled by a
50m-long ceramic mural
by Joan Miró, one of four
pieces which he donated
to the city. Produced
in collaboration with
Josep Llorens Artigas,
it’s composed of 4,865
handmade terracotta
tiles, each 26x38cm, and
weighs in at 30 tons.
