MARINE MAMMAL OIL SPILL RESPONSE GUIDELINES<br />

Records<br />

The importance of recording information cannot be over-emphasized. Record collection<br />

enhances individual animal care, response evaluations, and the ability to accurately characterize the<br />

best practices for appropriate care. In-house records are maintained at the rehabilitation facility<br />

and copies provided to the trustee agency. Final reports, including chain-of-custody and sample<br />

collection records, must be delivered to the trustee agency within 30 days of the date the Federal<br />

OSC declares the response closed.<br />

Scientific Records<br />

The following types of records are necessary to preserve vital information for scientific study,<br />

natural resource damage assessment, and improved rehabilitation practices and techniques:<br />

Oiled mammal sighting: records and maps for all reports of oiled mammals<br />

Search Effort Log<br />

Live Mammal Log<br />

Dead Mammal Log<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> Mammal Intake Form<br />

Rehabilitation Records: documents care for each animal, including feedings,<br />

treatments, medications, normal/abnormal activities.<br />

Lab Analyses Report: identifies all samples sent to labs, requested analyses, lab results.<br />
