a. At any time of the year, the Holder may, importlexport (worldwide), nonlisted<br />

marine mammals, for medical treatment, from the following speqies:<br />

1 ) Order Cetacea (except endangered or threatened speoies); and<br />

2)<br />

Order Pinnipedia (except walrus and endangered species).<br />

B. Research/Enhancement Conditions [50 CFR 2 16.36(b)]<br />

1 PROJECT I - SPECIMEN COLLECTION: MAFUNE MAMMALS AND<br />

ENDANGERED OR THREATENED SPECIES<br />

a. The Working Group on Unusual <strong>Marine</strong> Mammal Mortality Events<br />

(WGUMMME) will provide advice on any live animal investigative<br />

activities.<br />

b. Only experienced and trained personnel will perform any live animal<br />

investigative activities.<br />

c. Samples in A.1 .c. may be acquired and possessed only if the samples were<br />

taken under authority of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife <strong>Service</strong> permit or<br />

authorization and samples were taken in a humane manner.<br />

d. Soft or hard parts authorized in A.1 .b.13) may be collected/salvaged from<br />

marine mammals and endangered species provided no animals are harassed<br />

as a result of the taking, or the Holder has a scientific research permit to<br />

harass that species.<br />

2. PROJECT II - ENHANC<strong>EM</strong>ENT ACTIVITIES: MARINE MAMMALS AND<br />

ENDANGERED OR THREATENED SPECIES<br />

Prior to release, the HolderRI or CIS may tag marine mammals and<br />

threatened or endangered species undergoing rehabilitation;<br />

Animals entangled in rope or other debris may be tagged and<br />

monitored; and<br />

Only experienced personnel can apply and deploy tags by an<br />

acceptable means.<br />
