Origin of contracted timber and pulp
h We request our pulp and timber suppliers to submit confirmation of their
compliance with all relevant national legal requirements and to furnish proof
that all raw materials delivered by them are sourced from forestry enterprises
managed in keeping with the social, ecological and economic principles of
sustainability.
h NEUSIEDLER encourages and supports sustainable forestry practices among
its wood and pulp suppliers and prefers suppliers with forestry management
systems that have been certified according to internationally recognised standards.
h We do not accept raw materials sourced from protected forests and reserves
or from forests that are worth protecting. We purchase pulp from tropical
regions only if it is sourced from sustainably managed plantations.
h In order to underpin our commitment, we request our suppliers to furnish
information on the origin of their raw materials on a regular basis. If there is
evidence that suppliers are not meeting our requirements and not readily implementing
corrective measures suggested by us, they will not be awarded
any further contracts.
h We shall provide information to our customers and other interested groups
about the progress made towards continuously increasing the share of certified
raw materials.
Environmental impact of contracted pulp production
h We ask our pulp suppliers to submit their environmental performance data
and information on their production processes on a regular basis. These data
provide the basis for the benchmarking of our suppliers.
h We obligate our suppliers to continuous improvement of their environmental
performance, a decisive criterion for our supplier assessment and selection.
h We purchase only elemental chlorine-free (ECF) and total chlorine-free (TCF)
bleached pulp.
h In our environment and sustainability reports we regularly provide information
on the progress made towards continuous improvement of the environmental
performance of our mills and products.
Today, approximately 20% of the contracted pulp comes from
certified sources. By 2005, NEUSIEDLER plans to increase this
share to 35 or 40%.
