Only the conversion of the long fibre pulp bleaching at Syktyvkar to 100% ECF planned for 2004/2005 will be delayed on account of the extended scope of the project.
The remodelled PM18 The new wood yard “Impulse“ project A major NEUSIEDLER investment focus has been “Impulse“, a project aiming at the complete remodelling of PM18 and a considerable enlargement of the pulp mill at Ruz˘omberok. In detail, the project provides for a complete reconstruction of PM18 and the installation of a new slitter and control system, raising the annual paper production capacity to 290,000 tons. The pulp mill is being expanded to include an additional cooker and a liquor incineration boiler, and the wood yard is being rearranged. The annual pulp production capacity will be raised by approximately 140,000 tons to a new annual record of 410,000 tons. While the reconstruction of PM18 was completed in 2003, the step-wise reconstruction of the pulp mill will not be finished before the end of 2004. The major benefit of this project lies primarily in the considerably improved environmental performance of the two mills. The remodelling of PM18 nearly halved the specific fresh water demand from 15 cubic metres to 8 cubic metres per ton of paper, which is an international record low. The reconstruction of the pulp mill will lead to a considerable reduction of the malodorous organic sulphur emissions that will be collected and burned in the liquor boiler in the future. In addition, the dust emissions from the lime furnace will be reduced to a minimum by electrostatic filters and fly-ash precipitators. The installation of a new ozone bleaching stage will make the mill a pioneer in terms of organic chlorine compounds. Noise and dust emissions will be reduced substantially by the partial renewal of the wood yard and the conversion from pneumatic to band conveyors. The extension of the liquor evaporating plant to seven stages will lead to a significant increase in energy efficiency.
