1.5 OVERVIEW OF MINING OPERATIONS
1.5.1 EXISTING FACILITY
The purpose of this section is to provide the reader with a brief description of the activities
taking place at Riebeeck and to ensure that the environmental management measures (in
Section 6) can be assigned to specific activities.
The description of the activities is linked to the organisational flow of the mine. The
organisational flow includes the core processes which are:
Mining
Production
Packaging and logistics (dispatch of product)
In addition to the core processes, PPC Riebeeck have the following supporting processes:
Quality assurance
Risk management (including environmental management)
Engineering
Administration / Stores
Organisational performance.
The description of the activities has been provided in a chronological order which follows the
mining of the limestone, shale, sand and clay through to production and dispatch of the clinker /
cement from the plant, followed by a description of the supporting services to ensure the
smooth operation of the mine. This section describes both the existing operations and the
intended cement expansion project.
The description of the activities is interlinked into the PPC Riebeeck aspect register which was
developed for the implementation of the ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system.
The following figures have been provided to assist in the readers understanding of the
description of the activities that take place on the site:
Figure 1.4 provides a diagrammatic indication of the overall process that takes place on
the site. This diagram is interlinked into the organisational flow at Riebeeck.
Figure 1.5 provides an aerial photograph of the whole of the site.
Figure 1.6 provides an aerial photograph of the current plant area and a brief
description of the function of each building.
