PPC Riebeeck West: Storm water Management Plan Page 13 1.5.2 Mining process description The mining process is outlined in Figure 1.7 below and described in the following text. Figure 1-7: Flow chart of the mining process. Current mining operations include the mining of the Block A and Block B. The short term intention is to combine Block A and B into one pit which is regarded as the Final Pit. Over time the Final Pit will be deepened (240m in depth) and extended in diameter towards the current plant resulting in the Opti Pit. To ensure continued limestone supplies future mining will involve the opening up and development of the Delectus Pit (in over 30 years). The mining department can be separated up into the following sub-headings: 1.5.3 Mine and resource planning The aim of any mining operation should be to ensure optimal utilisation of the mineral resources. In order to achieve this aim at PPC Riebeeck, mine and resource planning is critical.
PPC Riebeeck West: Storm water Management Plan Page 14 The chemical compositions of the mineral deposits have been established by means of an indepth prospecting programme. On-going prospecting of future mining areas is continuous throughout the life of mine in order to improve the understanding of the mineral resource and therefore improve the final utilization of the resource. Topsoil / overburden removal and storage forms an integral part of resource planning at Riebeeck. Every year an annual plan is developed to be implemented by the mine manager. The annual plan compliments both a phased plan (+/- 5 years) and a long term mine plan, all which are coordinated with the final closure objectives of the mine. Mine planning is updated as more information concerning the reserves is established. Current Mine Planning: The base of the existing mine pit is currently approximately 120 m deep (i.e. 78 mamsl). The pit will be expanded eastwards (towards the existing factory) and deepened to approximately 180 m (i.e. 18 mamsl) to form the “final pit”. Day to day mine planning is achieved through taking a composite of the fines from the drill holes required to mine the reserve and sampling the composite as per the “drill hole sampling” work instruction. This is used by the mining manager to ensure that as chemically consistent a material as possible is been mined for clinker production and allows for high and low grade material to be blended, which reduces wastage of mineral resources. 1.5.4 Haul road construction & maintenance In order to access the mineral reserves, haul roads are required. Under current mining conditions in the Final and Optimal pit, the limestone reserves are accessed through the deepening and widening of the current pit, hence no new haul roads are required except for the extension of the roads within the mining pit. As and when mining commences from the new Delectus pits and access to the new cement plant is required, additional haul road construction will be required. The positioning of haul roads is determined during the mine resource planning meetings. Haul roads are maintained through appropriate grading as and when required. 1.5.5 Stripping of topsoil and overburden In order to access the limestone reserve, through the extension of the Final Pit to the Opti Pit, topsoil and overburden needs to be removed. As and when mining commences on the future development of the Delectus pit, topsoil and overburden will also need to be removed. As and when topsoil is available for removal, it is removed separately to the underlying overburden and is either used immediately in concurrent rehabilitation projects within the mining area or stored separately for future rehabilitation projects.
