1.7 PACKING AND LOGISTICS
As and when the OPC and the Rapo cement enter the various cement silos, it becomes the
responsibility of the Packaging and Logistic Department, for the dispatch in either in bulk, bags
or 1.5 ton bags. The department is also responsible for the acceptance of delivery of raw
materials via rail or road. For an indication of the various buildings associated with the
customer services department refer to Figure 1.6. Currently approximately 370,000 tons of
cement is being dispatched from PPC Riebeeck per annum. The cement is transferred from
silos through air slides and screw conveyors.
Figure 1.15 provides an overview of the activities implemented by Packing and Logistics
Department.

On average (subject to market demand) the distribution of cement is as follows:
20% of cement produced is Rapo
o Rapo – 40% distributed in bags, 60% in bulk
80% of cement produced is OPC
o OPC – 10% distributed in bags, 90% in bulk.
Approximately 30% of cement distributed by rail and 70% by road.
Clinker can be transferred to other PPC operations in bulk either by rail or road.
