community care <strong>and</strong> residential care (study related<br />

to Irel<strong>and</strong>, not Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Wales). Not all areas<br />

of cost could be estimated owing to scarcity of<br />

data, <strong>and</strong> they do not include day care services,<br />

day hospital services or drug costs. Various data<br />

sources were used in estimating costs including<br />

national data sources, survey data <strong>and</strong> dementiaspecific<br />

data. The estimate <strong>for</strong> the annual cost per<br />

patient (Irel<strong>and</strong>) of residential care is £16,299,<br />

based on data from the Department of Health<br />

(1995) <strong>and</strong> case-study work published by Blackwell<br />

<strong>and</strong> colleagues. 154 The average weekly cost of<br />

residential care (across various settings) was £312.<br />

The estimate <strong>for</strong> the annual cost per patient <strong>for</strong><br />

community care is £1054.<br />

Wolstenholme <strong>and</strong> colleagues 122 report a<br />

retrospective analysis of a longitudinal data set <strong>for</strong><br />

a cohort of 100 patients diagnosed with AD or<br />
