Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: FFI was founded <strong>in</strong> 1903, and is<br />
the world’s longest established <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
conservation body whose remit is<br />
to protect the entire spectrum <strong>of</strong> endangered<br />
species <strong>of</strong> animals and plants<br />
worldwide. It has a unique method <strong>of</strong><br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g, the 100% Fund, where all funds<br />
donated go directly to conservation projects,<br />
and it is creative <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative<br />
solutions to conservation<br />
problems. FFI is committed to empower<strong>in</strong>g<br />
local people, assist<strong>in</strong>g them to realise<br />
their own potential for effective species<br />
conservation. Its constituency is made up<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual members and a network <strong>of</strong><br />
conservation bodies, pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and<br />
key decision-makers from over 100<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The FAO was founded <strong>in</strong><br />
October 1945 with a mandate to raise<br />
levels <strong>of</strong> nutrition and standards <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
to improve agricultural productivity, and<br />
to better the condition <strong>of</strong> rural populations.<br />
FAO’s ma<strong>in</strong> functions are:<br />
development assistance <strong>in</strong>formation and<br />
support services, advice to governments<br />
and a neutral forum for <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
co-operation. A priority <strong>of</strong> FAO is<br />
encourag<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able agriculture and<br />
rural development, a long-term strategy<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> both present and future generations<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>ile: The GEF is jo<strong>in</strong>tly implemented<br />
by the United Nations Development<br />
Programme (UNDP), the United Nations<br />
Environment Programme (UNEP) and<br />
the World Bank (see below).<br />
The GEF is a f<strong>in</strong>ancial mechanism that<br />
provides grants to assist develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
countries to address environmental<br />
problems that transcend <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
borders, <strong>in</strong> four areas: global climate<br />
change, pollution and overexploitation <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational waters, destruction <strong>of</strong><br />
biological diversity, and depletion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
ozone layer (the GEF has country <strong>of</strong>fices<br />
<strong>in</strong> the region, see country sections<br />
